Η αστυνομία στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία δήλωσε σήμερα πως πιστεύει ότι αντιφρονούντες Δημοκρατικοί (που τάσσονται κατά της βρετανικής κυριαρχίας στην περιοχή) προσπάθησαν να σκοτώσουν αξιωματικούς της αστυνομίας σε ένα περιστατικό που σημειώθηκε στη διάρκεια της νύχτας.
Η αστυνομία δήλωσε ότι έλαβε μια αναφορά γύρω στα μεσάνυχτα για έναν ισχυρό κρότο στην πόλη Κρεγκάβον λίγο προτού μια εφημερίδα με έδρα το Μπέλφαστ λάβει τηλεφώνημα στο οποίο ο καλών ισχυριζόταν ότι ένας μηχανισμός πυροδοτήθηκε εναντίον αστυνομικής περιπόλου αλλά δεν πέτυχε τον στόχο του.
«Σε αυτό το στάδιο πιστεύουμε πως ο μηχανισμός ήταν πραγματικός και πως αυτή ήταν μια προσπάθεια από αποσχισθέντες Δημοκρατικούς τρομοκράτες να δολοφονήσουν αστυνομικούς», ανέφερε η αστυνομική υπηρεσία της Βόρειας Ιρλανδίας.
Δεν είναι σαφές αν ο μηχανισμός πυροδοτήθηκε κατά τη διέλευση του περιπολικού ή αν η επίθεση είχε σχεδιαστεί έτσι ώστε να στοχεύσει τους αστυνομικούς την ώρα που αποκρίνονταν σε αναφορές από πολίτες, ανέφερε η αστυνομία.
Τον Ιούνιο, η αστυνομία ανακάλυψε μια βόμβα κάτω από το αυτοκίνητο αστυνομικού στο Μπέλφαστ η οποία όπως είπε είχε τοποθετηθεί πιθανόν από μαχητές των εθνικιστών.
Η ειρηνευτική συμφωνία του 1998 έθεσε τέρμα σε μεγάλο βαθμό σε τρεις δεκαετίες σεχταριστικής βίας στη Βόρεια Ιρλανδία, όμως οι αστυνομικοί γίνονται σποραδικά στόχος μικρών κυρίως δημοκρατικών οργανώσεων οι οποίες αντιτάσσονται στη διακυβέρνηση της περιοχής από τη Βρετανία.
